Don’t Send That Selfie: How NOT to Use MMS for Business
You might be excited to get going with TextUs MMS, generating new leads through promotional pics or speeding up an onboarding process with photos of documents over text. But, you also want to make sure your MMS communication is appropriate, constructive, and useful.So, here are 5 ways NOT to use MMS for business.
Don’t send offensive images.
You probably know not to send an image to a professional contact that you wouldn’t send to your grandma. It’s also important to remember that what’s innocuous to one person might be very offensive to another. For example, while some might think it’s all in good fun to share pictures of themselves having a drink, some might find that a fireable offense. So err on the side of caution.
Don’t send selfies.
Your Facebook friends may go Like-crazy over your latest selfie, but chances are, your professional contacts are not interested. It will make you seem unprofessional, overly familiar, and like you have a bit too much time on your hands.
Don’t send sensitive information over MMS.
While you don’t want to send selfies, sending an image of a workspace, a product, or a team meeting might be a fun way to engage your audience. However, if you do send these images, make sure that no sensitive information is inadvertently included.
For example, if you take a picture of your workspace, it might include client information on your computer screen, a piece of paper with your company’s financial information on it, or, if you work in healthcare, patient info that would violate HIPAA.
This goes beyond making a bad impression with your contacts — you could be fined for sending these images or even face more serious consequences. So, check that image before you send it out to your contacts.
Don’t go overboard with images.
While a few choice images can be really useful for moving your prospect through the funnel or building relationships with your clients, too many images can be a nuisance. As always, you want to make sure your providing value and not verging into spam territory.
And, keep in mind, images consume data at a higher rate than SMS texts, so be mindful of your contacts’ phone contracts, too. So, be thoughtful about when you send images and when a plain text message will do.
Don’t send GIFs or other amusing pics at the wrong time.
Sending GIFs and fun relationship-building images is a great way to stay connected with your contacts. But make sure that your funny message doesn’t interrupt an otherwise serious conversation. A GIF to say congratulations on an interview is appropriate, but a laughing gif in the middle of an appointment-setting conversation might be confusing or off-putting.
A good rule of thumb is to be as thoughtful and purposeful with your MMS communication as you would with any other messaging.
